Response to Gun Violence in El Paso, Dayton, and Gilroy
Content Warning: This statement includes details of gun violence.
The Bridge stands with those killed and impacted by the onslaught of violence that occurred this week. We stand with those in Dayton, Ohio, whose lives were cut short by a man with a lengthy history of overt, aggressive misogyny. We stand with our Hispanic and Latinx brothers and sisters in El Paso, Texas who were targeted due to the very nature of their identity that we celebrate here at The Bridge.
Our hearts are broken for Dayton, El Paso, and Gilroy. After the horrifying acts of domestic terrorism that recently occurred, the United States has experienced 250 mass shootings in 2019.
The United States is the only country to have more mass shootings than days in 2019 thus far.
The United States is the only country to have more guns than people.
We do not need thoughts and prayers. We need policy change. We need gun control. We need intelligent, compassionate leaders in office who will not coddle white supremacists under the guise of mental illness, but rather boldly call it what it is.
We cannot and will not allow hate and violence to win.
Enough is enough.
El amor todo lo puede.
In love + solidarity,
The Bridge
