To be “Privileged” and Poor

The college experience for low-income students of color at affluent PWI’s is one that’s drastically different from their white peers. Conversations about socioeconomic status and money are uncomfortable ones to have, but extremely important. As a Black woman from a low-income family, I know the hardships that I have faced in my time at UNC, and I know how it feels to not feel like you belong. The purpose of this piece is to give a voice to my peers who have similar experiences and to help start having these difficult conversations that are vital in understanding how the intersectionality of being low-income and a racial minority impact students.
