I breathe you in

but you’re not oxygen;

You are what I want 

not what I need. 

I breathe you out 

and choke a bit... 

I hesitated 

on the release

Learning to Love Myself Again

My hair wraps around itself tightly 

curling like my hips curve out my body.

My nose sitting flat and pretty, 

between my high cheekbones, 

that match my aspirations. 

Melanin deepens my skin and conversations.

My eyes brown like the leaves 

that die just to become awakened… 

Finally. 

I look in the mirror and see somebody
