A few reasons why school starting should encourage and excite us--beautiful women of color.

Ephesians 2:10

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good

works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

School is right around the corner, and let me be real.

School is a topic that brings a lot of mixed emotions: from anxiety, to excitement, to tears, and exhaustion. YES, everyone experiences these feelings, they are inevitable. However, I want everyone to take a second to think about the privilege it is to attend public schools, private schools, universities, and colleges.

Therefore… School is cool and should encourage us because:

1. School is a privilege.

With all of the racial uproar, injustices, and discussions occurring today. Let us be reminded that ONLY 62 years ago (1954)… Brown v. Board of Education was enacted which declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. Although this law specifically catered to black and white students, this law was not only immensely pivotal for all students of color, but all students in general. The diversity of students brought a diversity of thought into the classroom. We are truly standing on the shoulders of giants, we are awarded more opportunities than our ancestors were. We are living out dreams that people died for, so that this generation may be successful.

Take away: Whenever you hear that school is starting and you start to groan, groan and groan FAST because just a few years ago people of color were not granted the same opportunities, resources, and education as their fellow Americans.

School is cool and should excite us because:

2. Jesus has our back.

As the focus verse above states, “For we are HIS workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).

This verse explains the reason for our excitement, Jesus. Jesus… created us for GOOD works, that HE, himself, created beforehand that we should walk in them.

School was in God’s plan for our lives… School is equipping us with the proper tools, experiences, and connections that will enable us to continue to do good works for our Lord and Savior. Therefore, let our hard work in school be an act of worship to our Heavenly Father.
(Colossians 3:13: And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.)

Take away: Let us walk into this new semester encouraged by the fact that we are exactly where we should be. Let us remember that our hard work and good works in school is an act of worship to our Lord Jesus, and let us give thanks for this phenomenal opportunity, attending school!

Now, I hope you do not forget that, S C H OO L is C OO L.
