What does your work on campus and beyond mean to you? Why is it worthwhile or rewarding for you?
My work on campus and beyond means that I’m being intentional about doing my do diligence to make my campus and the surrounding community a better place. It is critical that I be the change I wish to see in the world which is what motivates me to do work that isn’t just ordinary but amazing. My work on campus is something that I value very much because it has helped me to become better woman each and every day through experiences. My work keeps me humble and ready to fight through adversity.
How does your identity - your culture, queerness, citizenship status, etc. - motivate your work?
My identity as a black, cis, heterosexual, able bodied woman has taught me that individuals will in some way try limits my capabilities, my ideas, my expertise and my presence because of how institutional structures in society deem as Black woman less important. Being who I am, a sense of responsibility has been central in my approach to the work I do. God above all things has been my direct motivation because I know he crafted me this way for a reason and he is guiding my footsteps in the work I touch. I rely on God’s word, and the support of close family and friends to know that my work isn’t in vain as it is doing the inspirational things in others who need it.
Who is a woman of color who inspires you and why?
There are so many woman of color who inspire me but I would say my mother or as I call her “mommy” inspires me the most. My mother has been my biggest supporter, my prayer warrior, my caretaker, and my icon. For every obstacle she has faced in life, she has become more resilient and powerful. I sit back in admiration in all she has accomplished, the goals she sets for herself and the mother she has been. I’m so underserving but thankful to that God granted her to me.
